Mullet Wheelset

Introduction

A mullet bike is a type of mountain bike with a 29-inch wheel in the front and a 27.5-inch wheel in the back.

The idea of riding a large wheel at the front and a smaller one at the rear comes from motorcross and is now increasingly gaining acceptance in the MTB segment.Even in the UCI Downhill World Cup, more and more pilots ride with 29 inches at the front and 27.5 at the rear.

This unique wheel combination offers riders a fast and stable ride while also making it easier to maneuver and turn. The smaller rear wheel contributes to the bike's maneuverability by shortening its overall length. Meanwhile, the stability of the mullet bike gives riders greater control and confidence when navigating challenging terrain. Additionally, the smaller rear wheel provides improved traction on tight turns and trails.

Pros of Mullet Bikes

The benefits of using mullets on your bike are numerous. Firstly, they provide better control in rocky terrain. A larger wheel is less likely to get stuck, and steering becomes more manageable. Secondly, they provide more rear clearance, which is often an issue when navigating steep trails and drops. Thirdly, they help improve tight cornering by allowing you to take the inside line. Fourthly, a slacker geometry will reduce rolling resistance and increase your speed. Lastly, you might just want to try something new. Curiosity is rarely a bad thing.

Who Is The Mullet Bike Setup For

If you prefer the feel of a 27.5" bike in most situations but find it a little challenging to handle in rough, rocky terrain, then a mullet bike might be the perfect solution for you. The added capability of a mullet bike doesn't come at much of a cost. The bike remains quick and agile while also offering greater capability when things get rough. The front wheel of a mullet bike handles rough terrain much better than its 27.5 counterparts. On the other hand, if you're a die-hard 29er fan but want a quick, jibby bike, then the mullet bike is an excellent option. It's more maneuverable and fun than a full 29er bike without compromising the front end feel you're used to.
