What are cyclocross wheels?
Have you ever watched a cyclocross race and wondered what makes these bikes so different from an average road bike yet they look exactly the same. From frame to fork and even the wheels look the same…
But when we look more into CX bikes you will notice sleight differences in frame geometry, drivetrain, brake mounting and tire choice. The latter is in my opinion one of the most important choices in a cyclocross race where riders are put through a host of different terrain types.
To make a perfect combination the tires are paired to a 700C wheel set, a similar size as found on road bikes.

Can i use road wheels to replace cyclocross wheelset ?
Cyclocross Wheelset is specifically designed for Cyclocross bike, which is different from road wheelset.
What makes a good cyclocross wheelset?
For this reason some riders will use a regular road bike wheelset with a chunkier tire. Although it’s not a bad decision, you just need to make the right choice on your cyclocross wheelset. You can definitely choose a road wheelset, but make sure you get a wheelset that is a bit wider to better fit the larger width of the tires used in cyclocross racing. You should be looking for a wheelset with around 21mm internal width whereas most road wheels only have 18mm. The extra width will give you compliance and will give the most benefits for a larger tire. Remember the UCI rules permit only a tire width up to 33mm for CX races.

As most races are held on a 1.5- to 2-mile loop, mixing flat pavement, rolling terrain and off-road surfaces you’ll also need a wheelset that can shed mud pretty fast and pretty easily without losing much aero advantages. Therefore we recommend taking a wheelset that only has a 35 to 40mm deep dish. Once you take a deeper dished wheelset mud tends to stick much easier on your wheels which makes you heavier and less aerodynamic. And more drag means only one thing: you’ll be slower and more fatigued due to the extra effort.
When upgrading your CX-bike or buying a new one, take very well in consideration the type of wheelset you’ll use on your bike. Sometimes this simple choice can mean the difference between a loss or you standing on the podium.
